Whether you're in for a White Christmas or just dreaming of one, a Winter Wonderland themed Christmas party is sure to put everybody in a festive spirit.

Party invites tend to snowball in the lead-up to Christmas and by the end of the season it can become hard to distinguish one party from another. Planning a themed Christmas party is a great way to get guests into the festive spirit, break the ice at the start of the night and ensure that the party is one that won't be forgotten in a hurry.

What better way is there to celebrate Christmas than in the middle of a Winter Wonderland? Here are some ideas to help with the planning of a White Christmas that guests will marvel at.

Location: Walking in a Winter Wonderland

It doesn't have to be snowing outside in order to put together an exceptioanl White Christmas feel. Any of the following locations would make a great venue for a Winter Wonderland themed party:

  • Ice bar
  • Ice rink
  • A ski resort
  • An icecream parlour
  • A walk-in fridge/freezer – perfect for hospitality workers

Christmas Decorations: Building an Ice Kingdom

If Christmas party funds are limited, employ a bit of imagination and let decorations turn a typical function room into an ice kingdom Frosty would be proud to call home. Set an icy colour scheme – silver, white and blue – and shower the room with some of the following:

  • Paper snowflakes
  • Snow drifts made of foam or white material
  • Ice sculptures or glass/plastic look-alikes
  • Spray-on snow
  • Polysterene or blow-up snowmen and penguins
  • Snow globes
  • Winter clothing such as ice skates, scarves and mittens
  • White, silver and pale blue baubles
  • Lots of white fairy lights

Food: Not Just Snow Cones

Have nibbles contribute to the Winter Wonderland by sticking to the colour theme and setting out tasty treats in large glass bowls and decorative vases. Blue and white treats to serve include:

  • marshmallows
  • mints
  • popcorn
  • white chocolate
  • meringue
  • ice cream
  • White Christmas bars

Main meals should evoke memories or ideals a White Christmas by the fire and could include miniture versions of traditional favourites such as roast meats and vegetables.

Drink: Guzzle Some Festive Spirit

The drinks served at a Winter Wonderland themed party should do two of tthree things - warm guests up or cool guests down and ensure that guests are in a festive mood.

Some warm drinks fitting for a festive occasion include:

  • Traditional hot Chocolate
  • White Hot Chocolate
  • Warm eggnog

To keep the temperature down, serve cool favourites such as:

  • Icy cocktails
  • Iced coffee/chocolate
  • Cold eggnog

Play: Cool Christmas Games for Cool Christmas Parties

When holding a party, it's a good idea to have a few activities on stand-by should guests begin to get bored. Simple activities are great because everybody can understand them and they foster general dicussion. Consider some of the following:

  • How many lollies in the jar
  • Hand out Christmas bonbons
  • Hold a Secret Santa by asking each guest to bring a gift with them
  • Hot or Cold: Hide an item in the room and challenge a group of guests to find it by hinting whether they are hot or cold
  • A Christmas-themed celebrity heads

It's easy to turn everyday items into a magnificent Winter Wonderland with just a little imagination. By sticking to the theme through every aspect of the party, guests are sure to delight in the smallest of things - perhaps finish off the theme by cleverly renaming the ladies' and gent's bathrooms as 'Snowmen' and 'Snow-women'.
